# Chat with the assistant and give it a task

Start a conversation, provide a clear task, attach supporting files and understand replies, approvals and usage notices.

## What this is for

Use **Assistant** to ask a question or carry out work in the current workspace. A conversation can move from planning to drafting and, when permissions and approvals allow, to an actual action. Make clear whether you want advice, a draft or execution.

## Before you start

- Check your workspace and connect any account the task requires.
- Decide which campaign, account, destination or contact you mean. A name and a clear distinguishing detail are more useful than “that one.”
- For anything sent outside the app, prepare the intended recipients or destination and timing. Review the final proposal before approving.

## Send your first task

1. Choose **Assistant**. A new conversation shows **Start a conversation**; an existing conversation shows the transcript and **Message the assistant…**.
2. Type your request. For example: “Draft a short post about our consultation service for Instagram. Do not publish it.” This is an example request, not a fixed command you must copy.
3. Add facts or constraints that matter: audience, language, source material, desired length and whether the result should remain a draft.
4. Select **Send**, or press Enter. Shift+Enter adds a new line instead of sending.
5. Wait while the assistant works. Read the response and any request for clarification before submitting the next instruction.
6. If an approval card appears, inspect its content, targets and timing. Follow [Approvals](https://docs.lead-knight.com/en/assistant/approvals/) rather than treating the proposal as a completed action.
7. Check the final result in the relevant campaign, contact or connected service when the task changes something.

You can prepare a follow-up while a reply is in progress, but sending may remain unavailable until the current operation finishes. A disabled send control is not a reason to repeat the request in another chat.

## Attach supporting files

1. Select **Attach a file** and choose files from your device.
2. Check the filenames and previews. Wait until **Uploading…** finishes; sending is blocked while a selected upload is still in progress.
3. Explain what you want the assistant to do with the material, then send the message.
4. Remove a file using its removal control if it is wrong or failed. A failed file is not a successfully attached source.

The picker accepts JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF and AVIF images, MP4 video, MPEG/WAV/OGG audio and PDF. AVIF is converted before upload. There are up to 25 files per message. File-size or readability errors can still prevent an upload; follow the error shown instead of assuming every file of an accepted type will work.

Attachments supplied to the assistant are not automatically a valid social-media post attachment. Ask for the intended task and review the resulting post or media separately.

## Give a useful instruction

| Include | Why it matters |
| --- | --- |
| The outcome | “Write a draft” and “publish this” are different requests. |
| The exact target | Account, campaign, group, board, contact or recipient details prevent ambiguity. |
| The source facts | Supply what is true about your business; do not ask the assistant to invent claims. |
| Timing | Give the intended date and time, and check the workspace time zone in [Settings](https://docs.lead-knight.com/en/settings/overview/). |
| Review boundaries | Say what must remain a draft or wait for your review. |

For reusable facts and preferences, use [Memory and writing style](https://docs.lead-knight.com/en/assistant/memory-and-writing-style/) rather than retyping everything in each task.

## Usage notices

**Assistant usage limit reached** pauses new requests while allowing the current reply to finish. The notice distinguishes daily and three-hour token budgets from daily and three-hour outbound-message budgets. It shows the next availability time when known.

Use **Refresh usage** if the notice says availability is being checked or you want an updated status. A refresh failure does not mean the limit has disappeared. Starting **New chat** is for a fresh conversation, not a way around an allowance.

## WhatsApp conversations

A WhatsApp conversation is separate from the web chat. If you open it in the app, it is read-only; continue messaging and approve or reject actions in WhatsApp. Select **Web chat** to return to the web composer. Connection setup is on [Connections](https://docs.lead-knight.com/en/channels/overview/).

## If something goes wrong

- A file is too large, unreadable or fails to upload: remove it and choose a usable copy. Keep the task text; do not assume the assistant received that file.
- **Send** is unavailable: wait for uploads or the current operation, check that your message is not empty and check for a usage notice.
- The assistant is temporarily unavailable: use **Retry** when offered. Before repeating a publishing or sending request, inspect whether the previous action already completed.
- The page says the current chat changed elsewhere: your unsent message is kept. Read the newly displayed conversation before sending it.
- The assistant asks for a specific account or destination: give that detail rather than approving an ambiguous target.
